    Indoor Rowing Outdoors
Today I went to my first Indoor Rowing Competition of the 2007-8 season, outdoors at Dorney Lake. Dorney Lake is the Eton College venue that is going to be used for the 2012 Olympics Rowing Competitions.

I've always rowed ergs (rowing machines) indoors - usually in a Gym or Sports Centre, but also a rowing shed (at Newark) or an Arena (the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham for the British Championships) and at a Velodrome (in Manchester for the English Championships).

So this was the first time I've actually rowed an ergs outdoors. Fortunately the weather was kind and it neither rained nor was too hot or sticky.

The ergs at Dorney Lake were set up on two floating pontoons in the Lake itself. Slightly worrying as  the massed ranks of the Rowathon competitors (a Rowathon is similar to a Triathalon but avoids getting wet being 4k row on ergs, a 30k bike ride and 7.5k run) who preceded us got the pontoons visibly moving about and also the ergs seemed to be moving about on the pontoons and threatening to migrate into the Lake.

In the event there were only 4 of us doing the 2000m race and, having moved my erg well away from the edge, I didn't notice any movement of either the erg of the pontoon while I was racing.

Despite (or because of) some rather atypically loud grunts from me towards the end of the race I did the 2000m in 7:58.0, which was wonderful for a start to the season race where we had virtually no warm up: 7:58 equals my best time of last season and is, of course, below the magic 8 minutes.

Next challenges - to better my PB of 7:50.4 and to win a medal at the British Championships (I've come in 4th in each of the last 4 seasons).

    Well I'm here at Bicon.

Finally found an internet cafe, on my second attempt, hiden away in the basement of Sainsburys: absolutly no sign outside to say it was here.

Had to get on the net to book my entry for an indoor rowing competition in Enfield (of all places). It'll be the first race of the season and I'm having a go at 2000m, 100m and 500m. I must be mad.

Bicon mostly going OK, though I missed out on going to the Pride Parade today as (a) its nor very warm (b) I've only brought clothes for a London summer (c) I developed a tension headache this afternoon. Lilewsie I've not ben to either natrust social so far as I've been getting goose bumps on my arms even with my clothes on.

Tonight [info]nitoda and wuluf are abandoning me to go off to a club in Huddersfield, so it will realy be a do-it-yourself disco tonight. An tomorrow [info]nitoda will be sloping off to Lash for Lashes.

Anywat stor is now closing so must be off myself.

    Good News
The good news is that I've got an interview for my boss's job (My boss left us last week having got a promotion himself, to another govt. department.)

Quite probably I won't get it (after all, I've only been here 9 weeks), but its nice to pass the sift and get the interview, especially as its my unit manager (my bosses boss) who did the sift.

Spent a very long day painting Read more... ). So I really needed a good soak before dinner.

Also received a formal job offer this morning, for the job at the dti in London (so our move to London is that much nearer). It came with health and security questionnaires too, which seem to want to know everything! I wonder if they really want to know about /both/ my partners? Seemingly they do want to know about my complete criminal record - speeding in a 30 mph zone in a Reliant Robin in 1980 ).

Whoops- not trying to be un-friendly
Duh. Seems I had set up my livejournal settings so as to stop replies from friends who were not (yet) my livejournal friends (and I don't have many of those on my list /yet/). Hopefully this is now corrected.

    Newbie Time
Nitoda has persuaded me to join livejournal. I suppose she thinks I'm not spending enough time on the computer.

As it is I'm feeling rather sticky at the moment - apart from my mid-morning break for Danishes (which were all gone by the time Jane and I got there) and lunch, which was a treat from Linda for Jane, Jon and myself - we went down to the Aspley on the Canal basin and sat outside in the hot sun on my neck but with a very fresh breeze - I've been clearing my office: in the end there were 8 large bags outside my room and about 10 small boxes of stuff to bring home (books, articles, plant pot, etc). Getting 10 boxes along the corridor, through the double doors, into the lift, out to the car and into the boot was what *really* got me sticky.

Nostalgia: Listening to the radio at tea-time they had an article on and with John Mayall - it seems that he's celebrating his 70th birthday tomorrow with a gig in Liverpool. Now that reeeaaaally brings back memories.....
